Missed deadlines lead the city to lose millions in federal housing funds

The loss of funds has some council members upset.

“It's a lot of money,” said Council member Kymberly Pine, the Chair of the Council's Committee on Zoning and Housing, “It's extremely disappointing because we are 24,000 homes short to help our local people here on the island of Oahu and that money could've been used by those people who are suffering.”

The loss is also felt by Oʻahu's nonprofits.

“It's absolutely heartbreaking. Hawaii can't afford this. We're in the middle of a housing crisis,” Gavin Thornton, the Co-Executive Director of the Hawaiʻi Appleseed Center for Law & Economic Justice said. “We really need to be running as efficiently as possible. We can't afford to be throwing away resources.”
