Pedestrian Head Start

Background

Signalized intersections are some of the most dangerous places for people walking and biking in Hawaiʻi. These crossings put high volumes of cars and vulnerable road users in direct conflict, often with tragic results. Low-cost solutions like Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) and Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) give people a safer head start and make crossings more inclusive for those with disabilities.

While these tools are standard practice in cities across the globe, they are virtually absent in Hawaiʻi. With pedestrian injuries and fatalities on the rise, it’s time for lawmakers to require our state and county transportation agencies to act.
