Hawaiian Hope: Native Hawaiian Issues Project Report

Executive Summary

Over the course of the summer of 2012, Hawaiʻi Appleseed met with various leaders of the Native Hawaiian community to assess general advocacy needs among Native Hawaiians. Individuals we have met with include:

  • Konia Freitas, the Special Projects Coordinator at the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies;

  • Jonathan Osorio, professor at the Hawaiʻinuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge;

  • Lynette Cruz, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Hawaiʻi Pacific University; and

  • Kama Hopkins, Trustee Aide to Trustee Robert K. Lindsey Jr. at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

Each of these highly esteemed individuals has shared what they believe to be the most pressing issues within the Native Hawaiian community. Those issues include: education, land and housing, economics and sovereignty.
