This interactive dashboard visualizes Hawaiʻi-specific metrics by state legislative district, helping you connect data with your community.

Explanation of Data Variables

Economic Security

  • Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed. Households that earn above the federal poverty level but still do not earn enough to meet basic household needs such as housing, food, childcare, transportation, and healthcare.

  • The percentage of people living below the federal poverty line, meaning their household income is too low to meet minimum living standards.

  • The middle household income in the area.

Food Security

  • CEP is the Community Eligibility Provision which subsidizes free meals for all students. Schools with CEP (%) represent the schools that participate in CEP as a percentage of the schools within that geography. Number of CEP Schools represents number of schools that participate in CEP out of the number of schools within that geography.

  • The percentage of households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to help purchase groceries.

  • The total and average amount a household receives in SNAP benefits over one year.

Tax Credits

  • The Average Amount ($) families receive from the federal Child Tax Credit, along with the percentage of eligible households who participate.

  • The annual Average Amount ($) families receive from the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, and the percentage who participate.

  • The annual Average Amount ($) families receive from the state Earned Income Tax Credit, and the percentage who participate.

Housing

  • The percentage of households spending more than 30% of their income on housing.

  • The middle rent of all total rents in a specified geographic area.

  • The number of residential units occupied by a renter.

Transportation

  • The average one-way commute time for workers in the area in minutes.

  • The percentage of people who use public transit—such as buses, rail—as their main way of getting to work.
