Let’s Talk Food: School lunches in Hawaiʻi

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (DOE) is increasing local food in student meals as well as connecting our keiki with the ʻāina (land) through their food, using local products from the agricultural community.

The effort to include more local ingredients in student meals is made possible thanks to the local farmers. In addition, the DOE has established community partnerships with the help of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, the Hawaiʻi State Department of Agriculture, the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health, the Kohala Center, the Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation, Ulupono Initiative, the Hawaiʻi Farm to School Hui, the Dorrance Family Foundation, the Hawaiʻi Appleseed Center for Law & Economic Justice, the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, the Hawaiʻi Farm Bureau Federation and HMSA.
